When can you say a person follows a healthy lifestyle?

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, a healthy lifestyle or habits is measurable using these five areas: healthy diet, healthy physical activity, healthy body weight, zero smoking habits, and moderate alcohol intake.

All the above areas have a huge influence on a person’s overall wellness. But the primary factor that links an individual to serious diseases is an unhealthy diet.

What is a Healthy Diet?

Human’s primary source of energy and nutrients is food. Your body depends on the food you eat for growth and maintenance. For instance, infants need feeding every four hours. Meanwhile, kids and adults develop a normal eating pattern of three times per day, and some snacks in between meals.

A healthy diet is calculated and rated according to a person’s intake of healthy foods and unhealthy foods. Consequently, a healthy diet pertains to well-balanced eating.

Tips for Healthy Eating

The human body needs more than 40 nutrients to ensure good health. Unfortunately, one can’t obtain all these nutrients in one meal. It is why nutrition specialists always advise people to eat healthily and well-balanced food.

Practice Variety

Don’t take similar meals every day. Try to eat a wide variety of food if not for every meal, but daily. For instance, eat a high-fat lunch followed by a low-fat lunch on the next day. On the other hand, eat different types of meat every other day. If you are having red meat now, why not choose white meat or a fish, perhaps for tomorrow.

Eat Unsaturated Fat

Not all types of fat are bad for health. Saturated fats are the ones that cause negative effects on the body, especially on cardiovascular health. Examples of saturated fats to avoid are products from animal fat such as cheese, butter, whole milk, and fatty meats.

Unsaturated fats are completely healthy. It is part of a healthy diet and reduces the risk of high blood cholesterol levels. Examples of unsaturated fats are omega-3, omega-6, and monosaturated fats.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are great sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. According to nutritionists, a person must least eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Thus, instead of having a bag of chips for snacks, eat an apple, or any type of fruit. And, drink fresh fruit juice rather than carbonated drinks to quench thirst.

Control Food Proportion Sizes

Overeating is unhealthy. It can lead to weight gain or worse diseases.

Make sure to cook the right amount of food to prevent overeating. Also, use smaller plates to get smaller servings. Sharing a portion with a friend or with a family member is also helpful in controlling meal proportions.

Eat Regularly

Skipping meals is not the right solution to lose weight. Eating nutritious foods and exercising is the key to burning extra weight.

Denying yourself of food can lead to illnesses such as an ulcer. Moreover, skipping meals might lead to overeating due to excessive hunger.


Following a healthy diet is the golden ticket to longevity and overall wellness. It can make a big difference in the quality of life.
